Who is Eligible for TDI?

To qualify for Hawaii TDI benefits, an employee must have at least 14 weeks of employment in Hawaii, during which they were paid for 20 hours or more each week and earned a minimum of $400 in the 52 weeks before the first day of disability. Importantly, the 14 weeks of employment do not need to be consecutive or with a single employer. Additionally, to receive TDI insurance in Hawaii, the employee must be currently employed.

So, what is TDI?

Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) in Hawaii, similar to workers' compensation and unemployment insurance programs, serves as a 'wage replacement' program. This means that if you are unable to work due to an off-the-job sickness or injury and you meet the qualifying conditions set by the state of Hawaii Temporary Disability Insurance law, you will receive Hawaii TDI benefits. These benefits are designed to partially replace the wages you lost. To understand how does TDI work in Hawaii, it’s important to recognize that this program helps eligible individuals during their recovery by providing crucial financial support through TDI insurance Hawaii.

Does TDI coverage include medical care to employees?

No. here in Hawaii, TDI does not include medical care. Other states may vary. Check with your officials in the state you reside and are employed.

CAN AN EMPLOYER PASS ON THE COST OF PROVIDING TDI BENEFITS TO THEIR EMPLOYEES? IS THAT ACCEPTABLE?

The cost of providing TDI benefits may be financed in one of two ways: 1. Your employer may pay the entire cost. 2. Your employer may require you to share in the cost, in which case, your employer may deduct one-half the premium cost but not more than 0.5% of your weekly wages up to the maximum set annually by DCD. If your employer deducts more than the law prescribes, notify the DCD Office im mediately. Example: An employee's weekly wage is $100. The premium cost is 80¢ per $100 of covered wages. Since the employer cannot charge the employee more than one-half the premium cost, the employee's share is 40¢. To further determine whether this amount is within statutory limit, calculate 0.5% of the employee's weekly wage of $100. The answer is 50¢. The 40¢ premium withholding is within statutory limit. No contributions can be withheld from an employee who does not meet the law's eligibility requirements.
